Tough Times… How To Get Beyond Them

Everyone, at some point in their lives, hits a rough patch, so to speak. In that moment when you are facing difficulty, it can be difficult to see beyond the challenge and to believe that brighter days are ahead. But, they are. Following are a few steps to help you as you navigate through the difficulty into a better place.

First, avoid isolation. When you experience losses or setbacks in your life, understand that hard times are essential to experiencing life’s fullness. In that moment, do not "shut down" in response; instead, allow others the gratification of extending themselves toward you in your time of need. Also, do not turn suffering into an idol; that practice makes way for your troubles to consume you. To combat those feelings, perhaps you can set aside a short time each day to acknowledge the feelings, and then move on from them. Or, you can create a playlist of songs that mirror those emotions, work through them by listening and allowing yourself to feel, or to talk to another empathetic individual. When the playlist ends, pick yourself up and make something of the day.;

Second, look at the bright side. Much of the way we see and react to life is based on our perspective. For example, a talented actress once recounted her own struggles after being terminated from a play directed by her artistic idol. After sharing her tale with friends, who shared their own tales of termination, she created a novel, play and documentary on the subject. In short, she added playwright and novelist to her resume, earned money from her efforts and helped many along the way. How’s that for turning lemons into lemonade?

Third, lean on your spiritual grounding. Hebrews 11:1 says this: “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” We all have some level of faith. Allow your circumstances to strengthen yours, believing that the best is still ahead of you. While moving through tough times may be more of a marathon than a sprint, the good thing to remember is that the race does, eventually, end.
